Cranbrook mulling fare-free transit model
The City of Cranbrook is considering financial changes for its transit system.
The City is looking at ways to boost transit ridership, including possibly switching to a fare-free model.
Mayor Wayne Price says they will hold off any major decisions until after the upcoming BC Transit Future Service Plan and Rural Transit Study.
“We want to increase ridership,” Price says. “And as one of the counselors had mentioned [Monday] there’s communities that have undertaken that type of program. The results very, in some communities it has increased ridership, in some it hasn’t made a lot of different.”
Price says council is directing staff to conduct a study and identify which options are the most viable.
“I think certainly the City has been working for the last two year very closely with BC Transit,” he says. “Just seeing if we really have the right model. Before we look at free transit, let’s make sure we’ve got the right model. Can we switch roots? Can we change our model a little bit to maybe accommodate and make it a better service.”
