Accessible trick or treating in Kimberley

Residents in Kimberley’s Alpine Crescent area are taking steps to make trick-or-treating more accessible for children of all abilities this Halloween.

Participating residents will hand out treats closer to the street from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, reducing barriers for children who have difficulty with stairs, steep driveways or other obstacles.

Participating households are also being encouraged to accommodate children’s sensory and other needs.

Suggested measures include limiting jump scares and other unexpected sensory experiences, and offering non-edible treats for children who need an alternative.

Orange lawn signs will identify homes taking part in accessible trick-or-treating.

The city says not all disabilities or accessibility needs are visible. Some children may not say “trick or treat,” make eye contact or wear a costume, while others may need more time or space.

Cognitive, sensory and other needs can affect how children take part in Halloween activities. Patience and understanding can help them participate.

Businesses taking part in this year’s Platzl Trick-or-Treat have also been asked to consider accessibility and ways to welcome children with different needs.

Accessible trick-or-treating aims to remove barriers that can make Halloween activities difficult for some children, without changing the fun.

Small adjustments can help more Kimberley children take part.
