Girls hockey talent on display at Kimberley showcase

Girls’ hockey took centre stage in Kimberley, as young athletes hit the ice for a showcase weekend highlighting the next generation of talent.

The showcase was part of the 2026-27 Female Super League (FSL) season. The FSL is a high-performance youth female ice hockey league in Western Canada.

This comes after the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has gained more spotlight, highlighting women’s sports on the main stage.

Local team Purcell Collegiate put on a high-performance display of skill, speed and determination. Purcell Collegiate School offers a blended program of high-level hockey training and university-prep education.

Purcell has three teams competing in the FSL – 16U, 19U Green, and 19U Gold – featuring players from around the world, including Canada, the United States, Taiwan, Australia, Poland, and Spain.

16U AAA Division

The Calgary Glaciers entered the showcase undefeated and sitting atop the division standings, but Purcell Collegiate was not intimidated by the challenge.

In a heated battle on Oct. 23, the Glaciers defeated Purcell 5-3 at Headwaters Academy Arena in Canal Flats.

In the second clash, it was hard-hitting and intense, with Purcell shocking the Glaciers with their first loss of the season, winning 4-3 at Kimberley Civic Centre on Oct. 24.

The competitive spirit continued Oct. 25, when the Glaciers won 7-3.

Three Purcell players finished the weekend among the division’s top five scorers. Rugile Stirnaite ranked third with six points, followed by Teagan Whitehead in fourth with five points and Yaan Yuen in fifth with four points.
