Construction work begins today (Oct. 16) at the intersection of Ross Street and Wallinger Avenue as the City of Kimberley aims to improve visibility and safety for pedestrians and motorists.
It’s where Kimberley’s only traffic light stands, and the community has raised safety concerns.
The City’s Active Transportation Network Plan also identified the location as an area where improvements could create safer, more accessible connections for people moving through the community.
City staff say they have continued to advocate to the Province of B.C. for improvements at the intersection, and the work is now moving forward.
Planned improvements include realigning the intersection area to improve sightlines, installing new curb letdowns at three corners, and realigning the sidewalk on the east side of the intersection.
The City says these changes are intended to improve visibility and make the intersection safer and easier to navigate for pedestrians and motorists.
Construction is expected to continue through the remainder of October. Drivers and pedestrians should expect construction activity in the area and are asked to pay close attention to posted signage, use caution and give crews plenty of room to complete the work safely.
The City thanks the Province of B.C. for responding to the concerns raised about this location and for investing in improvements that will help make the intersection safer and more accessible for everyone.
