The City of Fernie has updated its Community Standards Bylaw, introducing new quiet hours to reduce noise in the community.
Under the updated bylaw, quiet hours are now in effect daily from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., with construction noise prohibited between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.
The new regulations replace the previous quiet hours, which ran from midnight to 6:30 a.m.
The updated bylaw also prohibits the following disruptive noises at any time:
- Vehicles without functioning mufflers or with altered mufflers that increase noise.
- Excessive horn use, squealing tires, unattended vehicle alarms, air horns, and engine brakes.
- Electronic or mechanical devices used to frighten or deter wildlife.
Fines for violations range from $100 to $250 depending on the offence and can go up to $500 for subsequent offences.
Certain essential and permitted activities are exempt, including emergency response, avalanche control, municipal maintenance such as snow removal and garbage collection, emergency repairs, and approved special events.
