Discussions are underway at Cranbrook City Hall following the province’s recent time change announcement.
In a statement, Cranbrook city council said it wants to meet with other local governments in the East Kootenay after the region was not included in Monday’s (Mar. 2) time zone change announcement by the province.
As it stands, the change will not affect the East Kootenay, meaning the region would remain on Mountain Time in sync with neighbouring Alberta.
The rest of the province is set to remain on the new Pacific Time.
The city said the provincial announcement indicated it would be up to local governments in the East Kootenay to decide whether they want to be part of the change.
“As a council, we want to meet with all of our regional local government partners around the RDEK board table to see if a change is wanted here and to make sure our approach is coordinated,” said Mayor Wayne Price.
“This announcement by the province on Monday was as much a surprise to council as it was to the rest of the community and the region. We understand the concerns and the frustrations our residents and business owners are raising — we hear you loud and clear.”
The city added that the Regional District of East Kootenay has already suggested the topic will be up for discussion at a later date.
