City of Fernie introduces new business license fees

The City of Fernie, after conducting a review earlier this year, has approved new business license fees for 2026.

City officials say the review focused on ensuring Standard Business License and Short-Term Rental (STR) fees remain fair, competitive, and reflective of costs.

The process included discussions with local businesses and short-term rental operators, according to the City of Fernie.

Under the previous structure, short-term rental operators paid the same fees as standard businesses.

However, the City says the STR program requires significantly more staff time and enforcement resources.

Fernie issues two types of STR licenses, each with different impacts and levels of oversight.

The City says the updated fees reflect that.

The new annual license fees for 2026 include:

• Standard Business License: $150

• Condo/Hotel Short-Term Rentals: $700

• Primary Residence Short-Term Rentals: $500

Business licenses must be renewed by January 31, 2026.
