Spot fires reported east of Kootenay River as battle with St Mary’s River Wildfire continues
BC Wildfire Service crews are working to extinguish spot fires seen east of the Kootenay River, as they try to prevent the 3,342 hectare St Mary’s River Wildfire from spreading even further.
Fire was spotted across the Kootenay River onto the Bummers Flats on the East side of the river. The spot is between the CPKC rail line and the Kootenay River in wetlands.
The BC Wildfire Service says these spot fires are being prioritized, as crews are working in the area to contain the spot with assistance from aviation resources when visibility permits.
Heavy equipment is on standby to support. Crews and heavy equipment also worked overnight on the LD Ranch road and the work is ongoing Saturday.
No further fire growth was observed on the west flank north of the airport or north flank over to Francis Lake. The wildfire is holding well on machine guards in that area.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City activated their wildfire train again to support suppression activities and keep humidity increased. CPKC personnel were also monitoring for potential fire growth.
