The national weather forecaster has now issued a severe thunderstorm watch across the Elk Valley and East Kootenay, from Invermere to Cranbrook.
According to Environment Canada, as of 2 p.m. today (July 2), the region is expected to experience a 60 per cent chance of showers or thunderstorms, with wind gusts reaching up to 40 km/h before tapering off later this evening.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” wrote the agency. “Local utility outages are possible.”
Heavy rain can cause flash floods and reduce visibility, while strong winds can damage trees and buildings – even cars.
