College of the Rockies partners on food security initiative

Student hands out 30 meals to unhoused.
College of the Rockies and the Community Connections Society of Southeast BC (CCS) have launched an initiative aimed at improving food access for unhoused residents in Cranbrook, while providing a hands-on experience for students.
As part of a Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) placement, Pre-Education student Katelin Conarroe prepares and delivers 30 fresh salads each week.
The meals use produce from CCS’s Urban Farm and its Food Recovery Program, with support from Public Health Outreach and the RCMP.
The project is part of a broader plan between the College and CCS to expand WIL opportunities.
The program is intended for students to gain experience in food production and distribution while contributing to local food security efforts.
“It is really fulfilling to know the contribution we are making to the health and wellbeing of some of the more vulnerable citizens in Cranbrook.” Conarroe said.
“I personally create and deliver each salad with the support of the amazing team at CCS, and I immediately see the results from the gratitude I get in return.”
Funding support for the initiative comes from the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior.
CCS’s Urban Farm is plans to donate over $11,000 in fresh produce this year to food programs across the region.
