The City of Cranbrook is updating the public on the clean-up of some of what council called “eyesores” around the community, following the demolition of the Kootenay Springs building.
The City says it is now shifting its focus to the Knight’s Hall property on King Street, also known as the Tudor House or St Eugene Hospital.
At this time, the city says it has put forward two remediation orders, which the previous owner has yet to comply with, for cleanup work to be done totaling $900,000.
The first remediation order was issued when the building burnt down and “had to be taken down to eliminate the danger of the remaining burnt-out brick shell falling on the public sidewalk.”
According to the city, that then “created more mess with the large debris pile that is now visible.”
The second remediation order was then issued to clean up the pile of building rubble, and the remainder of the site.
Now the previous owner has until September to sell or pay three years’ worth of property taxes and clean up the site, or it will be turned over to the City of Cranbrook.
City officials say the “property may remain an eyesore” until it is sold or is owned by the city.
