City of Cranbrook planning renos for RCMP building
Long overdue renovations are in the works for the Cranbrook RCMP police station.
Cranbrook City Council approved last night an over $540,000 budget to develop an updated design plan for the detachment building.
The City’s Tony Hetu says designs are being worked on and construction could start in 2024.
“The design is going to determine what the renovation is going to be,” Hetu says. “And I’m hoping through the end of this I’ll be able to bring forward a report to council showing exactly what the renovation will entail. I’d look forward to that further in 2023.”
Hetu says it will be the first renovations for the building since the late 1970s.
“A lot of the building doesn’t meet current RCMP specifications and requirements, security requirements, we do require some updating in that regard,” he says. “As well as some through the building assessment we also found some structural elements that need to be repaired.”
The proposed renovations could expand the life of the current building up to 25 years.
