Fernie streets will be brighter, as the City converts more than 200 light standards to LED technology to improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Starting mid-November, contractors will replace City-owned streetlights throughout the community, identifiable by their decorative metal poles.
This project follows BC Hydro’s 2020-2023 province-wide program to replace BC Hydro-owned streetlights with LEDs.
It’s expected to be completed in January, estimated to result in $20,000 in energy and replacement cost savings annually.
BC Hydro is also providing a one-time incentive of nearly $40,000 to help cover initial fixture replacement costs.
The City says the LEDs were selected based on existing lighting levels and wattage, with careful review of colour temperature, also referred to as warmth.
