The Nature Trust of British Columbia (NTBC) has launched a fundraising project aiming to protect rare and sensitive ecosystems in the Kootenay River.
The NTBC is raising money to purchase and protect 354 acres of critical habitat in the Kootenay River Floodplain.
It’s located on the traditional and unceded territories of the Ktunaxa and Secwépemc Peoples.
The Kootenay River Floodplain is an ecologically rich area that features rare, largely intact riparian ecosystems.
If protected, this land will join the Lower Wolf Creek Conservation Complex, making the land more viable and resilient by providing corridors for wildlife to move more freely.
The rich wetlands and riparian areas shelter waterfowl and shorebird species, and the land supports several species at risk, such as western painted turtle and long-billed curlew.
The campaign is looking to raise $300,000. To donate or learn more, visit ntbc.com
