Castlegar gets $12K funding to boost transit in community

The federal government is investing over $10 million in rural transit projects across B.C., including in Castlegar.

The Castlegar Community Services Society has received $10,000 from Ottawa, plus an additional $2,000 from other grants, for a feasibility study to enhance its existing volunteer-based transportation initiative.

The town joins 12 other communities in receiving the Rural Transit Solutions Fund, which supports expanding on-demand and fixed-route services in remote areas.

“Whether you live in a large city or a rural community, you should be able to count on reliable transportation to get where you need to go,” said Patrick Weiler, MP for West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky Country. 

“The Government of Canada is investing more than $10.6 million across British Columbia to support a wide range of projects that reflect the unique transportation needs of rural and Indigenous communities.”

Data from the Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Department says one in five Canadians live in rural communities, and rural areas across the country account for nearly 30 per cent of the national GDP.
