Parks Canada has issued a bear warning for the Floe Lake Trail and Campground and the Numa Pass area in Kootenay National Park.
A female grizzly bear and yearling cubs have been reported frequenting the area and displaying curious behaviour, including investigating bear-proof food storage lockers at the campground. A solo hiker was also bluff charged by the adult female.
Visitors travelling in the area or staying at the campground should exercise additional caution.
Parks Canada recommends:
- Travelling in groups of four or more
- Always storing food and other scented items in the provided bear-proof lockers.
- Always carry bear spray and know how to use it
- Always keep your pets on leash.
- Make noise and watch for fresh signs of bear activity like bear scat.
If you see a bear, give it space and consider leaving the area.
