Area restriction for Jumbo Creek rescinded

After nearly a month of fire behaviour, officials have now rescinded the area restriction near the Jumbo Creek wildfire, effective immediately (Aug. 26).

The BC Wildfire Service says activity has gone down at the 1,136-hectare fire located roughly 38 kilometres west of the District of Invermere.

“Before entering any area affected by a wildfire, people should be aware that significant safety hazards may be present,” said the Regional District of East Kootenay. “Fire-damaged trees may be unstable and could fall down.” 

The RDEK is also warning residents about hard-to-detect ash pits that can remain hot “long after” the flames have been extinguished.

The area restriction came into effect on July 31. The Jumbo Creek wildfire is currently listed as being held.

Smoke may still be visible within the fire perimeter over the coming weeks.
