A local water group says nearly 100 anglers, rafters and river fans came down to the Elk River last week for its River Ready Season Kick-off in Fernie.
The Elk River Alliance (ERA) held an event with local speakers from Yaq̓ it ʔa· knuqⱡi’ it First Nation, Nupqu and citizen scientists to talk about fish populations and river use on June 4.
“Many of us live, work, and play in this watershed so that we can recreate, and explore such a special location,” said ERA Executive Director Chad Hughes.
“This event demonstrated how that connection translates into respect for the river, and a desire to protect and share it with others.”
The charity began in 2010 under longtime resident and local environmentalist Lee-Anne Walker to help improve the community’s relationship with the Elk River through streamside restoration, water monitoring and community outreach.
