Emergency Preparedness Week is back in the region next week.
From May 3 to 9, the Regional District of East Kootenay will be ramping up its calls to stay prepared for emergencies as the district seeks to build greater resilience in its communities.
“Preparedness starts at home,” said RDEK Communications Manager Loree Duczek. “Research continues to show that strong social connections can reduce the impacts of emergencies and help communities recover more quickly.”
The RDEK will be kicking off the week early on Friday, May 1, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Jaffray Community Hall, with Family Safety Day coming to Fernie on May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fernie City Hall.
This year’s free fair will feature booths from various local organizations, including the East Kootenay Emergency Management Program, local fire departments and Search and Rescue, along with games and giveaways for attendees of all ages.
Last year’s host, Invermere, will also be hosting a Wildfire Preparedness Open House on the same day.

Residents are also urged to sign up for the Regional Evacuation Notification System and confirm their property to be notified if it’s affected by an evacuation alert or order.
“The ENS is used only for evacuation alerts and evacuation orders during critical events,” Duczek added. “It is an important tool that helps us notify affected areas as quickly as possible when every minute counts.”
Registration is encouraged by May 10, ahead of the region-wide system test the following day at 2 p.m. Users who already have the Voyent Alert! app are reminded to make sure it is still active on their phones.
The RDEK will be sharing information and resources, such as how to build an emergency kit and practice an evacuation, throughout the week to help locals get ready for a crisis.
“When individuals and families are ready for an emergency, they are in a better position to support friends, neighbours, and the broader community.”
