Cranbrook allocates savings to assess contamination at former Knight’s Hall property

The City of Cranbrook is continuing work to prepare the former Knight’s Hall property for sale.

At Monday (Mar. 23) night’s council meeting, officials approved using leftover funds from the site’s initial cleanup to move ahead with environmental studies at the property.

City council says the original cleanup budget was set at $1.29 million, but efficiencies during the demolition and recycling process brought the total cost down to $830,000.

This leaves roughly $460,000 remaining, with just over $57,000 now being directed toward further environmental testing.

Investigations by the City have already identified five areas of environmental concern on the site.

The next phase will involve drilling and soil testing to determine whether contamination is present.

If needed, more detailed analysis and eventual cleanup work would follow, pending further approval from Council.

City officials say the work is an important step in determining the property’s value and ensuring it’s ready for future development opportunities.

The City took ownership of the site in October 2025, with cleanup completed in January.

According to the City, the land is currently valued between $1.27 million and $1.43 million.
