The national weather agency is urging residents to stay safe amid heavy showers forecast for tomorrow (Mar. 20).
Environment and Climate Change Canada says roughly 30 to 50 millimetres of rain are expected for eastern Columbia and East Kootenay from now until Friday evening.
Freezing levels are also expected to reach between 2,000 and 2,600 metres, which could increase the risk of local flooding and landslides in sensitive areas.
The downpour comes from an atmospheric river that has been impacting the area this week, the agency added.
A yellow rainfall warning is active on Kootenay Lake with up to 70 millimetres expected in the area.
Rain is forecast to subside by Friday evening (Mar. 20), and freezing levels will continue to drop due to the passing cold front.
Drivers are asked to allow for extra travel time and watch for washouts near rivers and culverts.
