East Kootenay arts and culture spaces receive accessibility funding

Museums, galleries, performance venues and other arts and culture spaces across the Kootenays are receiving funding aimed at improving accessibility.
Columbia Basin Trust says it is supporting 23 projects with more than $1.23 million to help organizations reduce barriers for people with diverse abilities.
“These projects are aimed at ensuring more people can participate in the cultural life of their communities,” said Kris Belanger, senior manager, Delivery of Benefits, Columbia Basin Trust.
According to the trust, funding can be used for architectural planning and design informed by people with diverse abilities, infrastructure upgrades such as elevators, or adaptive equipment and technology.
East Kootenay projects include:

Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Landmark Society: Accessible raised platform for nine railcars at the Cranbrook History Centre ($91,900).

Cranbrook Community Theatre Society: Accessibility assessment and architectural concept drawings for the Studio Stage Door ($18,900).

Cranbrook and District Arts Council: Automatic door opener, equipment purchase, and building upgrades at Cranbrook Arts ($35,400).

Creston and District Historical and Museum Society: Accessible washroom, stairs and ramp, equipment, and website improvements at Creston Museum ($48,000).

Creston Community Auditorium Society: Hearing loop, audio system upgrade and designated seating at Kootenay River Theatre ($43,400).

Elkford Arts Council Society: Website upgrades, equipment purchase, and infrastructure improvements at Elkford Art Studio ($47,100).

Fernie and District Arts Council: Automatic door opener, stair railings, equipment and website upgrades at Arts Station ($58,100).
