Fraud reports can help connect cases, even when no money is lost

East Kootenay residents are being encouraged to report fraud attempts even when no money is lost, because the information can help identify patterns and connect incidents across the country.

Information submitted to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre can help identify emerging trends and links between incidents in different jurisdictions. Reports support intelligence, prevention and enforcement efforts, and help the centre and its partners warn Canadians about fraud.

Unsuccessful attempts can also provide details about the messages, phone numbers, websites and payment methods fraudsters use.

Fraud can affect people beyond their financial losses. Victims may experience stress, embarrassment, anger or a loss of trust, and may be unsure what to do next. Fraudsters use manipulation, technology and convincing stories to target people from all backgrounds.

Talking with family, friends or others they trust can help victims seek support and help others recognize similar tactics. Open conversations can also reduce the stigma that may discourage people from reporting fraud.

What to Keep

Anyone who encounters fraud should keep information related to the incident, including:

• Emails, text messages and other communications.
• Phone numbers and usernames.
• Screenshots and website addresses.
• Receipts and transaction records.
• E-transfer, cryptocurrency or other payment information.
• Copies of advertisements or social media profiles.
• Dates and times of contact.
• Any other information connected to the incident.

Where to Report

Fraud and cybercrime should be reported through reportcyberandfraud.canada.ca/, Canada’s national reporting system for fraud and cybercrime.

Victims should also report incidents to local police, particularly if they have lost money or a criminal investigation may be required.

Local police can investigate incidents within their jurisdiction, while national reports help identify connections across Canada.

Anyone whose money or financial information is involved should contact their financial institution or payment provider as soon as possible.
