The BC Wildfire Service is working with the Invermere Fire Rescue and Ministry of Forests to conduct a low-intensity planned burn in the community.
Weather permitting, site preparations will begin today (Apr. 9) at District Lot 4616, on the east side of the CastleRock subdivision, with burning planned for the following day.
“This work is part of ongoing wildfire risk reduction efforts in Invermere and has been developed through several years of planning,” said the District of Invermere.
“The objective of the prescribed fire is to reduce hazardous fuel buildup, improve forest health, and help protect nearby homes, infrastructure, and access routes from the impacts of severe wildfires.”
Active burning at the roughly 24.1-hectare site is expected to last up to two days, followed by up to five days of mop-up and monitoring.
The District’s Communications Coordinator, Sean Tonelli, will be available on site for a public information tent on Friday (Apr. 10), from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Crews may delay operations if weather, fuel moisture and venting conditions aren’t suitable for the burn.
