Motorists driving through one section of Highway 93 just north of Radium Hot Springs may need to take a different route.
From now until noon on Saturday, March 21, a 90.9-kilometre stretch of Highway 93 between the West Boundary of Kootenay National Park and the end of Highway 93 will be closed due to higher avalanche risk in the area.
The Kootenay National Park added that Highway 93S will be closed from the TransCanada Highway to Settler’s Road. Traffic will be rerouted to the Trans-Canada Highway between Lake Louise and Golden, with access available via Highway 95 through Radium Hot Springs.
The estimated reopening is on Saturday, March 21, at noon.
Highway 93N will also close from the TransCanada Highway to the Town of Jasper until noon the same day.
On the flip side of the mountains, Rogers Pass also closed yesterday as Parks Canada and the Selkirk Avalanche Program began conducting avalanche control activity on Highway 1 through the road, as well as between Revelstoke and Golden.
“Travellers are asked to plan an alternative route during this time,” wrote DriveBC. “We apologize for the late notice of this but also find ourselves at the mercy Mother Nature.”
That closure is expected to last until Thursday, March 19.
