An air-quality warning has been issued for areas north of Cranbrook, including Golden, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
Interior Health says the warning was issued after elevated levels of coarse particulate matter were found in the region.
Health officials warn that exposure to coarse particulate matter can pose risks, particularly for infants, seniors and people with chronic health conditions such as asthma or heart disease.
Interior Health advises those with underlying medical conditions to postpone or reduce outdoor exercise until the warning is lifted.
Anyone experiencing symptoms such as persistent eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing is urged to follow the advice of a health-care provider.
Officials say current conditions are expected to continue until weather patterns change or local emissions decrease.
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
