Wastewater system returning to normal in Fernie

The City of Fernie says the final emergency wastewater discharge point was closed Saturday (Dec. 13), and no untreated effluent is being released into the river.

In a release issued Thursday (Dec. 11), the city said recent weather events caused the system to malfunction, forcing emergency discharges.

With emergency discharges halted, the city says it has begun post-incident reporting and follow-up with provincial ministries.

Officials say flows in the system remain elevated but are returning to normal.

City crews will continue to monitor system performance and weather forecasts to ensure conditions remain stable.

The city thanked residents for their patience and cooperation and said further updates will be provided if conditions change.
