Folks who love visiting the Rockies across the B.C. border can soon do so year-round, after a new investment from the Alberta government.
The Alberta Ministry of Tourism and Sport will be developing plans for all-season resorts in Fortress and Nakiska, as well as Castle Mountain, located roughly 90 minutes southeast of Fernie.
“By helping revitalize Alberta’s legendary ski resorts, we are striking the right balance of economic growth, environmental stewardship and Indigenous opportunity,” said Alberta Minister Andrew Boitchenko.
Over the next 10 years, the three resorts could create 24,000 new jobs and generate $4 billion in visitor spending.
Developers and operators have also been encouraged to partner with local businesses and source local materials, talent and service providers – many of which are from Indigenous communities.
“By capitalizing on this potential, Indigenous tourism can propel Alberta’s tourism sector to become a national leader and serve as a tangible tool for economic reconciliation, including job creation, language revitalization and cultural pride,” said Chelsey Quirk, CEO of Indigenous Tourism Alberta.
Development is slated to start in 2026.
