Record-breaking heat across southern B.C

Several communities across southern British Columbia, including Cranbrook, recorded new daily maximum temperature records on Monday, June 9, amid a late-spring heat wave sweeping the province.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Cranbrook was among the hottest locations, setting a new record high of 34.4°C, surpassing the previous mark of 32.8°C set over a century ago in 1918.
Weather records in the Cranbrook area have been maintained since 1901.
Cranbrook wasn’t alone in breaking historical records.
Here’s a summary of the communities that joined Cranbrook in setting new daily maximum temperatures for June 9, 2025:
- Sparwood Area: New record of 31.4°C (old record: 29.3 °C in 2015; records since 1969)

Castlegar Area: New record of 36.4°C (old record: 34.4°C in 1918; records since 1916)

Creston Area: New record of 34.8°C (old record: 33.3°C in 1918; records since 1912)
- Nelson Area: New record of 35.3°C (old record: 33.2°C in 2015; records since 1904)

With many of these records breaking benchmarks that had stood for over 100 years, the data highlights a notable change for early June.
Environment Canada continues to monitor conditions closely and advises residents to stay cool and hydrated as the heat persists across the region.
