Wanted man in custody following car stop and foot chase in Sparwood

Elk Valley RCMP are thanking two people who willingly involved themselves during the arrest and flight of a suspect from police last month.
On March 30, 2025 at 6:20 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP members were on patrol near the 100 block of Aspen Drive in Sparwood when the officer observed a vehicle known to possibly transport a local man wanted on several outstanding warrants from the Elk Valley area. After the vehicle was stopped near the Esso Gas station, Mounties say the officer recognized the person in the passenger seat as the wanted man and proceeded to arrest him for the outstanding warrants and for being within 50 km of Sparwood BC.
After placing hands on the man, police say the man decided to pull away and flee. A foot pursuit ensued toward Highway 43, where RCMP say contact again was made with the man, who continued to run from police. Mounties say a couple of citizens stopped to observe the activity at the intersection of Highway 43 and Aspen Drive, one of whom attempted to use his door to slow down the suspect, who then proceeded to bounce off the door and continue to run down the steep slope just off the highway, eventually losing his footing and both shoes in the process of cartwheeling toward the trailer park in the lower section of Aspen Drive.
After observing the man roll down the hill, Mounties say the officer commandeered the other vehicle for transport. This unidentified driver drove the officer to the bottom of the road leading into the trailer park. The other officers on duty set up a containment zone and notified the Police Dog Service team, who eventually arrived on site around 8:00 p.m.
Once the dog track began, RCMP say the subject was eventually located hiding underneath a flat deck trailer. When directed to come out, Mounties say the man refused to present himself or show his hands and, with the assistance of the police dog, was taken safely into custody.
Police say the man was formally arrested and then transported to hospital where he received treatment from injuries sustained during the arrest. After treatment, he was taken to RCMP cells for further processing and to await a bail hearing.
The suspect, a 36 year-old man, was remanded by consent the next day to appear by video on April 7, 2025 in BC Provincial Court on new charges related to breach of his conditions, resisting arrest and the outstanding warrants.
Elk Valley RCMP encourage anyone else with information pertaining to this event to provide their statement to police.
