New Sparwood multiplex back on radar
With overcrowding of its facilities, the District of Sparwood has opened up the discussion for a new multiplex, although it isn’t necessarily a pressing priority.
Mayor David Wilks says, while it’s needed in the community, he doesn’t want the process rushed, something he feels personally responsible about with the current facility.
“We just went too fast, so we now have lots of time between now and the next election,” Wilks said.
“Even up to the next election, it doesn’t have to happen then, either. What we need to do is ensure we have full open dialogue with the community. Find out exactly what they do or don’t want.”
The council has shifted housing from its top five priorities replacing from a ‘next’ designation to ‘now’ status in its priorities.
“Certainly from a number of conversations that Council has had over the last several months is that the recreational facilities have now, from the perspective that we’ve run out of space,” the mayor continued.
“We do need to expand. Ideally, it would be nice if it was sooner than later, but the reality is that won’t be happening.”
In the meantime, with direction from Council, a committee is being established that will help the process move along.
