Cranbrook City Council looking into bylaw requesting cat registration
Cranbrook cat owners are being asked by the City to get their fur babies registered.
Cranbrook City Council gave three readings to an amendment to the Animal Control Bylaw at Monday’s meeting which would set out to have cat owners register their pets.
Councillor Wes Graham says the bylaw will help the City get a ‘paw’ up on problem cats.
“Majority of people that have an indoor cat, it’s not an issue, it’s not out running in the neighbor’s garden,” says Graham. “It gives a bit of teeth for that and people then can comply with the cat bylaw. We’re not the first in the province, so we did kind of follow some best practices there, and just see how it rolls out for Cranbrook.”
Graham says getting a license for your cats should be a simple process.
“And then [owners can] check out how we’re doing it, we’ve got a new system that we’re putting in place that we heard about [Monday], docu-pet I believe it was called.” Graham says. “So, there will be a way that is quite seamless and it will be easy for compliance.”
The bylaw will be up for adoption November 21.
