Grand opening held for new Moir Park Trail
The new Moir Park Trail is officially open.
Representatives from Cranbrook Rotary, JCI Kootenay, the City of Cranbrook and others held a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday for new trail, this was a 100th anniversary project for Cranbrook Rotary.
The project was originally conceived by Rotarian Joe McGowan, who wanted to find a way to bring more people to the park.
“Key points within this path, it is not just a paved path,” says McGowan. “Up in the forest in approximately 2 and a half metres high, are 3 paved viewing areas where people can sit, and look out and see the mountains.”
Joe McGowan says it was great seeing volunteers come together over the summer to build the trail.
“On the day that we did the excavation and the gravel placement, over 40 separate people showed up on everything from cooking through to raking gravel,” he says. “We had people doing cleanup, we had a meal that would have cost you $40 in a restaurant, and that’s what we fed our volunteers throughout the day.”
Future updates for the trail include sitting areas, Ktunaxa signage and a connection to the Rails 2 Trails pathway.
